That old saw, "Will It Play In Peoria," dates to the city's 1920s vaudeville days when stage shows were brought early on into the Peoria theater to monitor audience reaction. Only then were well-received shows taken on to Broadway or booked elsewhere in America. The cliché query came back into vogue during the Nixon years when politicos used Peoria as the "All-American City" to develop campaign strategy. Now many chain restaurants do the same, figuring that if their concepts play to Peoria appetites, they'll do well elsewhere. To that end, Peoria is dotted with a full arsenal of restaurants with names familiar nationwide, from fast food joints to places for pizza, seafood, and steak. Peoria also thrives with family owned outposts from the Adams Street Café & Catering to the third generation Fairview Farms Restaurant, famed for slaw dressing and greasless fried chicken, seating up to 300. Other Peoria favorites include a Baker's Square location, claiming the best pies around, the Big Easy Café and Coffee House on the riverfront in the Le Vieux Carre distrct, and Lariat Steakhouse, the longest established privately owned restaurant in town.
